What Is IPTV? A Plain-English Guide for Beginners
IPTV explained simply: how it works, what you need to watch, how it differs from cable and streaming apps, and how to try it safely with a free trial.
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Instead of reaching your TV through an aerial, a satellite dish or a cable box, the channels travel over your home internet connection, the same way a video on a streaming site does.
How IPTV works
A provider sends live channels and on-demand titles from its servers to the internet. Your device runs a player app that connects to those servers with the login details you were given, then shows a channel list and a TV guide. You pick a channel and the video starts, usually within a second or two.
- The provider gives you login details (an Xtream Codes login or an M3U playlist link).
- You install a player app on your device.
- You enter the details once. The app loads the channels and the guide.
- You watch live TV, movies and series over your broadband.
What you need to watch
- An internet connection. About 8 to 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K per screen. Use the internet speed calculator to work out your number.
- A device. Amazon Firestick, Android TV or Google TV box, Samsung or LG smart TV, Apple TV, a phone, a tablet or a computer. See the device set-up guides.
- A player app. Examples are TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro and iMPlayer. Our app comparison explains the differences.
- A subscription. You can start with a short free trial.

What to look for in a service
- A free trial or short first plan, so you can test on your own broadband before committing.
- A programme guide (EPG) that actually matches the channels. See what an EPG is.
- Support you can reach at match time, for example on WhatsApp.
- Clear terms and a refund policy you can read before paying.
- Honesty about what is and is not included. Individual matches depend on the rights holder.
Getting started
Pick the device you already own, check your speed, and ask for a trial. If you are in the US or UK, the local guides show what to expect on your broadband: browse all locations or go straight to US pricing or UK pricing.
