In a free IPTV trial, test the channels you really watch, live sport at match time, picture quality, buffering, the TV guide, support and the refund terms. The 12 checks below cover all of it.

A trial only helps if you test the right things. Use the same device, the same room and the same time of day you will really use. A 24-hour free trial is long enough to cover an evening of live sport and a quiet morning.

The checklist

1. Set-up time. Did you get login details quickly and was the app easy to install?
2. Channels you watch. Check the exact channels you care about, not the total count.
3. Live sport at match time. Test during a busy event, not in the quiet afternoon.
4. Picture quality. Look at fast motion. Compare SD, HD and 4K channels on your screen.
5. Buffering. Note any stalls and the time they happened.
6. Channel switching speed. It should change within a couple of seconds.
7. The TV guide (EPG). Are titles and times right? See what an EPG is.
8. Movies and series. Search for a few titles you know and play one.
9. Sound. Check stereo and surround, and lip-sync.
10. Second device. If your plan allows two screens, try both at once.
11. Support. Ask a question and measure how long the answer takes and how helpful it is.
12. Terms. Read the refund policy and the terms before paying.

Before you start the trial

Red flags during a trial

• No contact details or support that does not answer.
• Pressure to pay immediately or only by untraceable methods.
• Promises that every match and channel is always available.
• No terms, privacy or refund information.

After the trial

If you are happy, compare plans for the USA or the UK. Longer plans cost less per month, but starting with one month is a sensible way to confirm that it works for you. Keep your old service until you are sure.
