How Much Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV?

SD, HD and 4K IPTV need roughly 3, 8 and 25 Mbps per stream. Learn how to size your broadband for several screens and what to do if you are short.

You need about 3 Mbps for SD, 8 to 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K per stream, plus extra for other devices on your network. Add 20 percent headroom, and use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

Buffering is the most common IPTV complaint, and it is usually a bandwidth or Wi-Fi problem rather than a problem with the service. The good news is that the maths is simple.

Speed needed per stream

QualityTypical bitrateNotes
SD (480p)about 3 MbpsPhones, small screens
HD (720p / 1080p)8 to 10 MbpsMost live sport
4K UHDabout 25 MbpsNeeds a 4K TV and a 4K channel

Those are download speeds. Upload speed does not matter for watching. Bitrates vary by channel and by moment: fast sport uses more than a talk show.

A quick way to size your connection

  1. Add the bitrate of every screen that will stream at the same time.
  2. Add what other people are doing online (video calls 5 Mbps, gaming and downloads 15 Mbps or more).
  3. Multiply by 1.15 for 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 1.35 for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Ethernet needs no extra.
  4. Add 20 percent headroom.

Example: one 4K screen (25) and one HD screen (8) plus video calls (5) on 5 GHz Wi-Fi is 38 x 1.15 x 1.2, so about 52 Mbps. The internet speed calculator does this for you.

Why your plan speed is not your real speed

  • Wi-Fi distance and walls can halve the speed in the far room.
  • Evening congestion on shared lines (some cable and mobile broadband) lowers speeds at peak times.
  • Router age. An old router may not pass what your plan delivers.
  • Other devices updating games or backing up photos.

If you are short of bandwidth

  • Plug the TV or streaming box into the router with an Ethernet cable.
  • Move the device to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, or add a mesh node near the TV.
  • Lower one screen to HD.
  • Pause big downloads during live sport.
  • Follow the steps in how to fix IPTV buffering.

Test it properly

Run a speed test on the same device at the time you normally watch, not at 3 pm on a quiet day. Then test the actual stream during a busy event with a free trial. Our free trial checklist lists what to check.
